In 1948 there was a thriving youth club in Moneyglass . The Our Lady of Lourdes Youth Club’s many activities included boxing (Alex Woods) ,dancing ,drama ( Dick Money ) and Athletics but not football. Previous attempts to establish a local gaelic team in the form of the Patrick Sarsfield’s and Kevin Barry sides had ended in disappointment.
Due to what the founding members describe as a “longing for football” a group of individuals within the youth club decided that the time was right to try again and establish a club in Moneyglass.
There were already teams in Toome ( Lamh Dearg ), Cargin ( Erin Owens ), Ahoghill ( St Mary’s ) , Portglenone ( Rodger Casements ) and the senior and most successful of the time Creggan (Charles Kickham’s ) .
The umbrella of the youth club was to last five years and the club was to be named after a local saint , St Ergnat .
